One of the most effective ways to achieve a more friendly and inviting look is through non-surgical lip enhancement. At Rejuvena, we utilize
advanced dermal fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane to help achieve a more alluring look in a short period of time. We can also help
reverse a downward smile, add volume to thinning lips, slightly lengthen the mouth, and smooth out vertical lines that extend from the
lip border (smoker’s lines) or that extend downward from the corners of the mouth (marionette lines) – all non-surgically.
Or…if you are simply seeking a more voluptuous, sexy appearance with more lip volume, this can be achieved virtually overnight.
Lip Contouring
We can enhance your lips without making them look bigger,
or we can give your lips more volume, as you desire. To create a more pronounced mouth and fuller lips, a dermal filler is injected into the inside of the upper and/or lower lip. This is often
combined with enhancement of the contour of the lip by injecting the gel along the lip border (the vermilion border).
Redefining this edge leads to a more appealing look. It also prevents lipstick "bleeding" into the small lines around the lips.
To further enhance the effect, the lines that go up towards the nose (philtrum ridges) can be defined by injecting the dermal filler into them,
as well. To achieve the optimal result, a combination of these steps is often used. This is a
procedure where experience is of great importance.
To avoid an unnatural look (the “duckbill look, or an unbalanced lip), your choice of injector is paramount. Always choose a doctor who has
performed many (preferably hundreds) of lip enhancement procedures. It is important that the doctor not only listens to what you hope to achieve, but has
an artful eye as well.
We do not use silicone or fat injections when contouring lips because in clinical studies risks of uneven results and migration of the
products (which is difficult to control or predict) can lead to an odd, unnatural look in some instances.
Mouth Area Wrinkles
In addition to lip contouring, we can correct wrinkles around the mouth area.
Facial volume loss, decreasing facial laxity or environmental
factors such as smoke and other pollutants may lead to vertical ‘smoker’s’ lines around the lips. You may have never smoked, but have these
lines nonetheless, which can be caused by other things, including the use of a drinking straw or just the way you talk.
In addition to smoker lines, some individuals suffer from marionette or puppet lines. These are lines that extend downward from the corners of the mouth, creating a puppet-like appearance.
To correct either condition (smoker lines or marionette lines), we will generally use a dermal filler in combination with small amounts of precisely placed Botox Cosmetic or Fraxel II (or perhaps another laser
procedure). Dr Hardt may also suggest a combination of these, depending on the severity of your problem and how much correction you desire.
Frown Correction
As discussed above, lines extending downward from the corners of the mouth--known commonly as marionette or puppet lines--are another issue that
may contribute to an angry, tired, or simply unnatural appearance, over time.
Also, the corners of the mouth (oral commissures) deepen over time as volume is lost from the face. This may be present along with the marionette line,
or by itself. These conditions cause you to look unhappy even when you’re not and are one of the biggest contributors to an aged appearance.
Marionette lines and deep oral commissures are treated much the same way. Precisely placed dermal filler, in the area below the corners,
and in
the corner of the lip itself, will soften or eliminate the problem. This can be done without changing the volume of the lip, if that is your
preference. A small amount of Botox Cosmetic, placed in the muscle that pulls downward on the corner of the mouth may be recommended as well,
depending on the patient. The result is a happier, less tired, more natural looking appearance.

Q: If I get Botox Cosmetic around my lips, will I still be able to talk and eat the same as before?
A: If done correctly, and slowly (called dose titration), you will have no problems. Some people report a temporary inability to whistle or
suck through a straw, but this usually resolves in a week or two, is rare and not particularly bothersome to most. The targeted muscle that
encircles the mouth is very wide in all directions, and only a thin portion of this muscle is treated, leaving most of the muscle active.
Again, experience is the best assurance against undesirable results.
Q: How do you decide which filler to use?
A: Different substances that make up the various fillers don’t all behave the same. Some are softer, some longer lasting, etc.
What Dr. Hardt recommends for your lips may not be the same as what she recommends for your vertical lip lines or your cheeks.
This is another reason why extensive experience with different types of dermal fillers, not just one or two, is so important.
Q: Are these procedures safe?
A: The safety of the procedures performed at Rejuvena has been either evaluated and approved by the FDA, or stood the test of time, or both.
Many of the procedures require subtle and delicate techniques that come through experience and training. Dr. Hardt continually refines her
skills by training with other leading national and international physicians and medical personnel, which benefits you,
the patient. When you come in for your consultation, we will discuss what side effects you may expect.
Q: Do the procedures hurt?
A: Most patients tolerate treatments well. Depending on the treatment, we may utilize topical, local or dental anesthetics. Comfort is
of utmost important at Rejuvena Cosmetic Medical Center, and Dr. Hardt will discuss this with you prior to your treatment.
Q: How soon will I see results?
A: With some procedures, you will see nearly immediate results. With others, the results take longer, given the properties of the different
products utilized. Most of the lip enhancing fillers provide immediate results. Botox takes several days to show a difference. Depending
on the depth of your lines, you may require frequent, small doses of Botox, until the right dose for you has been reached. Also, some lines
take more time, even after the correct dose is achieved, simply because the lines are so deep. The deeper the wrinkle, the more time
and number of units (measurement of Botox Cosmetic dose) that you will need to soften your lip lines.
Q: When can I resume my normal, daily routine?
A: You will be able to resume your daily activities immediately. However, depending upon the treatment, you may experience bruising, light
swelling, or redness that can last a few days. Some patients experience no bruising, but a mild temporary swelling is normal. There are
certain steps you can take before and after your procedure to minimize these side effects. If they are a concern to you, then we recommend
concealers, such as Jane Iredale mineral make-up. Dr. Hardt, or of a member of her experienced staff, will go over these steps in detail.
If you expect same day treatment, call ahead to talk to a member of the staff for recommendations.
Q: How often will I need maintenance treatments?
A: The frequency of maintenance treatments largely depends on the product used, your metabolism, and the experience of your doctor in placing
the product at the proper depth and location. The mouth and the area around the mouth are the most active areas of the face, and the same filler
may not last as long in your lips as it might in other areas of the face (crow's feet, for example). The concomitant use of Botox Cosmetic, as discussed above, will allow
your filler to last longer by softening the strong contraction of the muscles of the mouth. We will discuss the likely frequency of your
specific maintenance treatments at your consultation.
Q: How can I avoid the unnatural look? I’m afraid of overdone lips--like some of the Hollywood stars-- that look so unnatural.
A: Choose a doctor who listens to you. It is easier (and less expensive!) to avoid overdone lips than it is to create them. The more
procedures your doctor has performed, the better chance of understanding the subtle, but important, variations of techniques
required among various dermal filler types on various parts of the face, and among varying skin types.
Also, a good eye is critical, as there is an art to the process. The best results are most often attained with a doctor who has both
extensive experience and the artistic ability to provide the results you want. Over the years, Dr. Hardt has honed her technique
with several of the most advanced dermal fillers. Her artistic touch helps optimize outcomes, as well.
Her treatment recommendations will also be targeted towards your main concerns. For example, if you are concerned only with the way
your lipstick bleeds, Dr. Hardt will help you determine the most effective, but least invasive, treatment to eliminate this. Or, if
you want full, pouty lips, she can help you determine if this look is right for you, and balance the outcome with your facial
features to help achieve the right look for you.
Q: How do I know about my doctor’s experience?
A: To help ascertain your doctor's experience, you might ask some of the following questions.
How long has your doctor been performing these procedures?
Is this one of the primary focuses of the physician’s practice?
Has your physician been trained in a specific technique; does your doctor sometimes train others?
Does your doctor attend frequent educational
events to stay current on the latest products and techniques?
