Nasolabial folds are creases on the sides of the nose that extend to the corners of the mouth, and sometimes curve around slightly under the lip creating a parentheses look. They can be relatively fine (a fine wrinkle) to a deep fold, even to the point that the skin above seems to hang over it. Many individuals begin to see this sign of aging in their 40's - although younger people with prominent cheeks may also have nasolabial folds. Nasolabial folds often deepen with time, marking a face as a tired, older face.

The good news is there are now several dermal fillers that have been FDA approved to treat this common condition, non-surgically. Restylane (made by Medicis) and JUVEDERM^® (made by Allergan) are temporary dermal fillers which generally last 6 - 9 months. Both are hyaluronic acids, which is a substance found naturally in the human body. These products have been used in millions of procedures internationally for several years. Restylane has been in use in the U.S. for several years, as well. JUVEDERM^®, although in use internationally for several years, was approved by the FDA in 2006 for use in the U.S.

A longer lasting dermal filler, Radiesse, was also approved for use in the U.S. by the FDA in 2006; however, it too has been in use internationally for several years in hundreds of thousands of procedures. Radiesse is made of calcium-based microspheres that are suspended in a natural gel. Radiesse lasts between 9 and 18 months. Restylane, JUVEDERM^® and Radiesse require no testing before treatment.

ArteFill is the longest lasting FDA approved dermal filler that may be used in the nasolabial folds. ArteFill is the most cost effective long term solution. Joan M. Hardt, M.D. was one of the physicians asked by Artes Medical, the makers of Artefill, to introduce this product. Injection skill and product understanding are of utmost importance when using a long lasting filler such as this one.
